Little is known about the ancient origin of this grape variety. In the old ampelographic bulletins of 1876 and later viticultural notes of the '20s, we read about a grape variety called Ribolla, grown in the district of Rimini and called in local dialect "Pignulèt.
Pignoletto in fact, with the name of Ribolla or Rebola, has been cultivated for quite some time in Rimini where it is held in high esteem for the wines it can give.
It was used, in the past, even to get good raisin wines, as we can see in the results from major wine competitions at the end of '800.
